“It all started when a project I led collapsed. Since then, I would get very nervous whenever I had to deliver the next project or pitch at work. I would struggle to fall asleep, dread the day before, and constant aches and pains in my body. My girlfriend told me that I had anxiety and to relax. I found this impossible and felt disappointed in myself as I had always performed at work. I started to withdraw and procrastinated. Colleagues and the team manager noticed this and started to question my capabilities. I started to forget who I was and believed that I was incapable. I started to view the rest of my life in a negative way.”
But, what if ‘Tom’ had the power to rewrite his story?
The current narrative ‘Tom’ had was tightly focused on his mistakes and anxiety. The true and whole story of ‘Tom’ was completely missed, which is he is intelligent, hard-working, a loving boyfriend and friend. By zooming out, deconstructing the different narratives that defines ‘Tom’, we start to create space to build self-esteem, self-appreciation and understanding. No individual is perfect. This reverses the downward spiral, allowing for all parts of ‘Tom’ to develop.
Rewriting your story and discovering you as a whole is possible with Narrative Therapy.
